Mike Russell (born 19 October 1981) in Tunbridge Wells, Kent (UK) is a world record holding English national and local radio presenter, creative producer, podcaster and voice over.
Mike was the host of kmfm Medway’s flagship breakfast show, weekdays 6-10am on 100.4 and 107.9 FM in Medway, Kent, and also a regular columnist for the Medway Messenger.
Marathon man Mike talked himself into the record books in 2007 after broadcasting live for one hundred and twenty six hours with no sleep on Time 106.6, a radio station in Berkshire. His marathon broadcast smashed the previous world record held by Italian DJ Stefano Venneri by one hour and raised thousands of pounds for the Give a Child a Chance charity.
The Kent based broadcaster hit the national airwaves in 2005 when he was hired by London’s Capital Radio to host the afternoon show (2-6pm) on the re-launched national digital station, Capital Life, working alongside Paul Phear, Micky Gavin, Nicola Bonn, Jonathan Miles and Anthony Davis.
Mike later honed his behind the scenes talents as a radio producer on Manchester’s Rock Radio (now Real Radio XS) from 2008-2009, in charge of the drive time show hosted by the legendary Mike Sweeney, formerly of Manchester’s Piccadilly Radio and London’s Capital Gold.
In 2004 Russell combined his on-air and behind the scenes talents when he made his debut on UK-wide sports talk station, talkSPORT as Mike Mendoza’s producer and sidekick “Mini Mike”.
Mike’s also worked on controversial “Mother of all Talk Shows”, hosted by firebrand Scots and former Labour MP, George Galloway. He also went on to produce other flagship talkSPORT personalities including James Whale, Charlie Wolf, Ian Collins, Adrian Goldberg, Mike Graham and Mike Dickin.
Mike honed his broadcasting skills on his local hospital radio station Hospital Radio Tunbridge Wells (1995-2000).
He got his first break in broadcasting on 20/20 FM in Maidstone, a short term radio station set up to campaign for a full-time licence for Kent’s county town. When the permanent licence was granted in 2003, Mike returned to Maidstone to launch the full time station, renamed as CTR 105.6 FM (now kmfm Maidstone), as host of its flagship breakfast show.
In 2002, Mike joined Birmingham’s number one hit music station, BRMB, as presenter and creative content producer, producing jingles and imaging.
Mike has been heard on numerous other commercial radio stations in the UK including Southern FM (now Heart Sussex), Sussex & Surrey’s 102.7 Mercury FM (now Heart Sussex and Surrey), Time 106.8 in South East London, 107.2 Wire FM in Cheshire and Thanet’s TLR 107.2 (now kmfm Thanet).
He made his international debut in 2001 during a working holiday in Australia, when found himself ‘accidentally’ presenting the breakfast show for North Queensland’s Kool FM.
Voice over and creative producer
Mike’s voice is also heard on many radio stations in the UK and around the world including Capital Radio London, talkSPORT radio UK, WABC New York city, 4KZ in Cairns (Australia) and many other radio stations worldwide where he is a sought after voice of radio jingles and commercials.
He is also a director of his own radio production company, Music Radio Creative, producing jingles and audio imaging for radio and TV stations, DJs, web sites and other businesses across the globe.
